ChatGPT Ads are available to eligible New Zealand advertisers through self-service Ads Manager. That does not make every NZ business or campaign eligible. Before preparing creative, check your legal entity, advertised offer, available geography and conversion measurement. This guide turns those checks into a practical launch decision.

Platform sources checked 19 September 2026. The decision brief below is Kiwi Web Design’s planning framework, not an OpenAI approval process.

Can a New Zealand business advertise on ChatGPT?

OpenAI lists New Zealand among the supported locations for self-service Ads Manager. The legal entity that advertises and receives billing must be based in a supported country. See the current Ads Manager availability requirements.

Account availability is not offer approval. As of our source check, OpenAI generally prohibits health and financial service ads outside the US, and prohibits legal service ads there. Check your exact offer in the advertising policies, including distinctions between regulated services and general educational or non-medical products.

For a mixed business, review the advertised product and its destination, not just the company’s broad industry label. Do not disguise a restricted service with a generic headline or redirect visitors to it after the click.

Can you target Auckland rather than all of NZ?

Verify this in the account before committing to a local campaign. Available locations vary by country and campaign type. New product-feed campaigns currently use country-level targeting; other campaign types can offer more granular supported locations. OpenAI documents these distinctions in its campaign setup guidance.

For an Auckland-only operator, we would record three things in the brief: the locations actually selectable, the area the business can fulfil, and what happens when an out-of-area person enquires. If those do not line up, narrow the offer or choose a different channel. Writing “Auckland only” in creative is useful information for a reader, but is not a substitute for a targeting control.

For a nationwide online shop, fulfilment becomes the more useful boundary: which products can reach which addresses, what delivery information the destination shows, and how stock is kept accurate.

What are you actually buying?

ChatGPT advertising is a sponsored placement, separate from the answer. Buying an ad does not buy an organic recommendation. The placement can contain a headline, description, image and destination link. OpenAI describes the format in Ads in ChatGPT: the basics.

This distinction changes the brief. Do not set “make ChatGPT recommend us” as the campaign objective. Set an observable outcome such as a relevant booking request or completed purchase. If the real objective is unpaid visibility in answers, that belongs to a separate AI SEO strategy.

KWD’s one-page launch brief

Complete these statements before creating an ad. A missing answer is a piece of preparation work, not a reason to invent a confident forecast.

DecisionWhat to record
OfferOne specific product or service, plus the policy section checked and date.
Customer situationThe decision a buyer is trying to make, in their own practical terms.
GeographyThe available account control and the area you can actually fulfil.
DestinationThe page that answers that decision, including restrictions and next step.
OutcomeWhat counts as an enquiry, a qualified lead or a sale; keep these separate.
OwnershipWho controls the account, checks tracking and follows up leads.
Test boundaryAn agreed spend limit, review point and conditions for stopping.

Consider an illustrative Auckland indoor activity provider. “Get more exposure” is not enough. A better brief identifies parents planning an outing, the suitable ages, available sessions, access information and the booking action. A click to a homepage with no availability leaves the key buying question unanswered.

The decision to continue should depend on the resulting enquiries and bookings, not merely whether people clicked the new format. If staff cannot distinguish unsuitable enquiries from bookable customers, fix that classification before attempting to scale.

What should happen before and after launch?

Before launch, check the destination on mobile, confirm that the form or checkout works, validate the chosen conversion event with a labelled test, and confirm who receives the enquiry. Our KWD tracking walkthrough explains why a submitted form and a platform-attributed conversion are different records.

After launch, review delivery and destination behaviour separately from lead quality. Poor delivery calls for account and eligibility investigation; visits without actions suggest an offer or destination problem; unsuitable leads require examining who responded and why. These are different diagnoses, not a single instruction to increase spend.

Is ChatGPT Ads the right next move?

There is no need to abandon an established source of customers to assess a new one. Use our ChatGPT Ads vs Google Search Ads comparison to decide which customer situation you are trying to reach.

Then complete the ChatGPT Ads readiness checklist. When the foundations are in place, our ChatGPT Ads management service can help turn the brief into a controlled test. Account review and ad approval remain OpenAI’s decisions; campaign results must be measured, not promised.
